[Assignment Models] Delta-7 Aethersprite: Part 3 - Finishing Up

The final parts of this model that I needed to finish up were completing the cockpit shape, adding the remaining fin, duplicating the engine, creating the guns and the astromech droid unit. First, I extruded the bottom of the current cockpit shape out slightly to create an inset edge to connect a second curved cockpit to. I then made a second cockpit shape out of a sphere, matching the curvature of the schematic and then made sure it aligned with the bottom of the newly extruded face.

With the cockpit shape now closed off, I started to work on the fin on the underside of the cockpit. To begin, I made a simple cube shape and scaled it down to be a thin panel. I then used the multi-cut tool to create a diagonal cut across this shape that matched the lines found in the schematic. With this line cut I then deleted the faces outside of the line and bridged the edges back together to create the angle as shown below.

Next I grabbed the engine object that I made earlier, duplicated it and moved it to the opposite side of the ship, finishing the detail for the back of the ship.

To add the guns to this ship I needed to first add grooves for the guns to rest in. To do this I created 2 cylinders and lined them up with where the grooves are on the schematics. I then selected these cylinders and the main body object and performed a "difference" boolean operation to cut the shape from the main body shape as shown below.

With the grooves in place I now started making the actual guns. First I created another cylinder object and then deleted all the edges on the front facing face. Using this face I started to create the shape of the gun using another multi-tiered extrusion. With the shape created I then finished by extruding the last face inwards to create a hollow within the gun.

Below is a picture of the 2 guns in place from the front.

The final detail I needed to add to this ship was the astromech droid present near the cockpit. This object was created by slicing a sphere just above the half way point and then extruding the edges down towards the ship. At the center point of the droid I scaled the extrude down to create a slight inset in the shape of the droid, giving it a bit more detail.

Below are 2 pictures of the finished ship from the front and the back.

While creating this model I found out very quickly that it was not as easy as I at first assumed, with much of the detail being quite difficult to create efficiently. I got to use a lot of techniques that I learned from making the previous models, such as using a multi-tiered extrusion to easily create details in gun barrels and creating dome shaped objects easier by slicing spheres.
